Riverside Avenue. \nThe fair-inspired community event will celebrate Washington agriculture while bringing together Dry Fly Distilling\, the Spokane County Fair\, local farmers\, Placeholder Studios and other community partners for an afternoon of live music\, farm animals\, educational displays and locally crafted spirits. \nBarnyard Bash will feature Clover the highland cow a Spokane County Fair mascot outside Dry Fly\, giving guests a unique opportunity to meet them\, take photos and learn more about the people and agricultural programs connected to the fair. Local farmers and agricultural partners will also be on-site to share information about farming\, grain production and the important connection between agriculture and distilling. \nThe event will highlight Dry Fly’s Barnyard Bash canned cocktail\, created in partnership with the Spokane County Fair. SUMMARY:Bab Geuleus: 1. Rice Bowl 2. Means of Living
DESCRIPTION:SHOW STATEMENT:\nThe word rice bowl in Korean (“bab geuleus”) functions as both a specific object and a figure of speech for livelihood\, and survival. In my work\, the bowl becomes a stand-in for what cultural memory is carried\, emptied\, and carefully protected in diasporic life. Meticulous craft disguises an understated humor that examines the tensions between preservation\, translation\, and disappearance. \n ARTIST STATEMENT:\nCommonplace objects embody a philosophy and culture that construct our lives. I recreate objects found from old family photographs as delicate paper sculptures. As I look through the photos\, I pick out common objects that those in the scene would have had the most interaction with. My making process is intentionally repetitive and careful. This meticulous labor elevates the handmade objects through the time and care spent producing it. The limiting characteristics of paper emphasize the replicated-ness of the realized object and I am interested in this preservation that deconstructs the original. I find the accessibility and fragility of paper very poetic. The handcrafted sculptures are a ritual of labor and time meant to carry the viewer beyond the immediate object to a thoughtful connecting point. These works are not about the objects\, but rather the time of the objects. Recreating these objects is a study of my family that I have always felt disconnected from\, but cherish. The ghostly visual of the sculptures produces a sense of preservation and loss. These sculptures are an exercise for locating my Korean American perspective. As I make the work\, I project myself into experiences I was not always present for. These objects are identifiably hand activated because I want the viewer to be able to recognize that action and insert themselves into an imagined scene with the work\, participating in my attempt to connect. \nThis show will be at Terrain gallery August 8th – August 29th\nGallery Hours: Thursday-Saturday | 4PM – 7PM

DESCRIPTION:Barbara Anderson & Patty Driscoll both work in soft pastels and often choose similar subject matter for their pieces. Friends for close to thirty years\, creative souls and art lovers\, they decided to embark on a creative journey after raising their families. Their very first pastel class was at a local art school\, and they were the only adults in the class. But they were hooked! They traveled and learned together with many professional artists which put them on the right track. Matt Schwenk is an internationally collected mixed media artist\, who specializes in dazzling\, textural\, abstract and photorealism paintings\, under crushed glass.  In his new series\, Matt aims to take his greatest inspirations from nature and his travels\, and abstract them into dreamlike escapes. Some places may feel familiar\, and some places may be pure fantasy; Matt Schwenk invites his viewers to explore the lines between them.   \n     “I consider the success of a work\, based on how much time I can steal from someone. Is there a sparkle that catches their eye and draws them over? But more importantly\, once I have caught a viewers attention\, what can I share with them? Are there things to discover that keep them there? Can my work provide a small escape from the day\, where people can get lost via swimming colors\, organic movements\, dazzling lights\, and layered textures? I hope so.
