SUMMARY:Found in Translation at Terrain Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Found in Translation\, a show by Elizabeth Lancaster at Terrain Gallery. This show is Elizabeth’s way of processing connections to her father and his family’s immigration experience. These images are inspired by stories told by her father\, memories of he and his family\, and their life as emigrants from Mexico. The body of work is born from questions that surround her own story – what it means to hold ties to so much culture and history and yet only know her heritage through what is translated by her family. Using watercolor\, Elizabeth learned to weave in her own visual perspective\, adding bold hues and patterns to juxtapose her father’s black and white stories of poverty\, hardship\, commitment to family\, and faith. This series of watercolors are both joyful and somber\, colorful and achromatic. Just the way the images of his stories and her heritage play out in her head. \nOn View: September 4th – September 26th\nOpening Reception: September 4th 5PM-8PM\nTerrain Gallery Hours: Thursday-Saturday 4PM-7PM

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Drunken Boxing"\, artwork by Blake Liliane Hellman
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on First Friday\, October 2nd\, from 5 to 8\, for the opening reception of Drunken Boxing\, a compelling new exhibit of the mixed-media paintings\, video and working notebooks of Blake Liliane Hellman. Drunken boxing is a discipline of deliberate imbalance. The fighter trains rigorously\, then lets that training go. It is a method of practiced relaxation\, a devious carelessness. A misstep is not weakness\, it is process in disguise. That same tension between discipline and surrender runs through the paintings of Blake Liliane Hellman\, whose work explores that moment when conscious control abates just long enough to disarm both artist and viewer. Drunken Boxing runs from October 2nd to October 30th\, open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 to 5:30\, Fridays and Saturdays 11 to 6

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Critical Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:The opening reception provides a first look at the show and a chance to meet the artists. \nMuseum and gallery directors\, nonprofit arts organization founders\, art teachers\, and other local arts advocates have made a life of showcasing the art of others\, while their own work is rarely seen. This exhibition challenges its participants to make new work\, providing space to honor the creative talents that led them to these careers. It also highlights the breadth of our regional arts ecosystem\, offering a chance to meet and connect with the stewards of our growing arts community. Prepare to experience a range of works in clay\, mixed media sculpture\, painting\, printmaking\, photography and more. Each participant’s work is united in the theme that they don’t make art to make a living\, yet they are immersed in art and with artists every day\, which is a unique perspective. \nCritical Infrastructure includes the work of Ali Blackwood (Inlander)\, Ali Shute (Coeur d’Alene Arts & Culture Alliance – retired)\, Ann Saberi (Jordan Schnitzer Museum WSU)\, Brooke Wagner (Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture)\, Chelsea Cordova (Arts marketing\, instructor)\, Eva Silverstone (The Hive / Spokane Public Libraries)\, Jeni Hegsted (founder of Emerge)\, Jennifer LaRue (arts writer\, advocate)\, John Fullmer (Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture)\, Kelsey Cook (Spokane International Academy)\, Kristin Becker (Jordan Schnitzer Museum WSU)\, Megan Cherry (Moscow Public Arts)\, Rachel Allen (Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture)\, and Rob Worstell (Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture). \nIn addition to its opening night\, which coincides with First Friday\, Critical Infrastructure is scheduled to run through October 31st and will be open FREE to the public every Thursday\, Friday and Saturday from 4pm – 7pm at 628 N Monroe St\, Spokane\, WA 99201.

SUMMARY:Critical Infrastructure at Terrain Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Museum and gallery directors\, nonprofit arts organization founders\, art teachers\, and other local arts advocates have made a life of showcasing the art of others\, while their own work is rarely seen. \nCritical Infrastructure is scheduled to run through October 31st and will be open FREE to the public every Thursday\, Friday and Saturday from 4pm – 7pm at 628 N Monroe St\, Spokane\, WA 99201.

SUMMARY:Spokane Symphony: Americana
DESCRIPTION:What defines the American sound? Cellist Zuill Bailey leads the premiere of Visions of Humanity\, a bold suite of variations by five living composers reflecting on shared experience from strikingly different perspectives. Framing the work is a portrait of America\, from Copland’s Shaker simplicity and William Grant Still’s lyric warmth to the cinematic sweeping landscapes of Billy the Kid.
