SUMMARY:What's on the other side: Works by JJ Harty
DESCRIPTION:We exist in a moment of over-stimulation and information saturation\, a moment where a short descriptive paragraph can create a beautiful\, sparkling image for us\, but then be quickly forgotten and dissolved back into the ether of the internet. This work is a playful way to make commentary on the serious questions about AI art. Using very simple pre-programmed vacuuming/mopping robots with some minimal modifications I wrangle the robots to produce something visually interesting. The catch is\, just like AI\, these robots cannot do it on their own. They need input and a lot of help from a person to make the art.

SUMMARY:In May the Liberty Gallery Features "Illuminated Spirit"\, Paintings by Janene Grende!
DESCRIPTION:This show centers around the flow of life in the natural world\, illuminated by the slanting light at the edges of dawn and dusk. The paintings celebrate life’s small wonders; the fleeting instance of a hummingbird\, the rushing sound of a waterfall\, the sweet smell of spring grass bending to the hooves of a new foal. \n“Native Mother Nature” is a grand centerpiece of creatures engaging in a peaceful afternoon of spirits coming together\, celebrating the simple joys of living as intended; and the painting “The Big Red Horse” honors the year of the fire horse\, a year of building for a future of powerful beginnings. \nStop by the Liberty Gallery at 203 N. Washington St during May to see Janene’s painting ~ stop by First Friday May 1st from 5-8pm to meet Janene in person!

SUMMARY:Cherylee Duncan is the PPP Guest Artist in May!
DESCRIPTION:There is a school of thought that artists must have only one recognizable style but Cherylee Duncan has too much artful energy to adhere to that ‘rule’. If she has a distinct trademark\, it would be ‘eclectic’ ~ Cherylee abhors waste and therefore get excited about reusing and upcycling as much as possible\, to emulate nature’s delight in each piece. \nWhen she crochets rugs from all recycled fabrics Cherylee saves bits and pieces for use in mixed media paintings. This method\, along with using only what is already on hand\, is how she has created her new series\, Threadscapes II ~ the options are excitingly endless. \nStop by Pottery Place Plus in the historic Liberty Building this May to see Cherylee’s work ~ come by First Friday May 1st to meet Cherylee in person!

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: ‘The Table Is Set’
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Terrain Gallery for ‘The Table Is Set’\, a unique art show by Liv Hebert Watkins\, honoring the everyday people\, objects\, and rituals in life. The central aspect of this concept is the dinner table– a space where individuals gather and interact as a whole; despite differences in background\, culture\, language or family ties. There is beauty in the simple act of gathering\, sharing a warm drink\, eating food\, and sitting together. Combining iconographic halos with commonplace faces and objects\, Liv explores the beauty and divinity of the ordinary. Meet artist Liv Hebert Watkins during the opening reception on May 1st from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm.

SUMMARY:ART COLLECTOR - GORDON WILSON!
DESCRIPTION:DSP FF 5/26\nIt’s First Friday time! \nFirst Friday is one of the best things about Spokane. We hope you get out and see a bunch of different First Friday shows. \nThere are all kinds of venues showing all kinds of artists. \nThere’s a place for every taste and skill level. \nIf you’re looking for some stunning art from award-winning professional artists then Marmot is the place for you! \nThis First Friday we’ll do something you’ve probably never seen before. We’ll celebrate an Art Collector! \nSomeone who goes far beyond just appreciating art – he spends his hard earned cash on it! \nHave you ever met one? They can be pretty awesome\, especially Marmot fans. \nMeet Gordon Wilson. You know him as an art creator\, but he’s also an art consumer. He’s got quite an eclectic art collection. Learn about it. Get to know them. Grrreat guy! \nAre collecting is something normal that normal people do. We encourage it at Marmot. \nMarmot is a commercial art gallery and Spokane doesn’t have much of a history of commercial art galleries. There was one back in the 90s\, but nothing since then. \nCommercial galleries exist in the big cities like New York and San Francisco\, but rarely in midsize cities like Spokane. In order to keep them alive you need an art buying culture and generally that’s a generational thing. \nBut we’ve somehow found the support here in Spokane. Thank you! \nCome say\, “Hi!” to everyone this First Friday\, May 1st\, at Marmot Art Space. Doors open at 5 PM!

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "A Rattletrap Sailboat"\, artwork by Benjamin Heiken
DESCRIPTION:This May\, D2 Gallery is extremely proud to present the artwork of Spokane artist Benjamin Heiken in his new exhibit “A Rattletrap Sailboat”. Heiken’s brutal use of collage and haphazard brushstrokes in his paintings evokes a sort of violence\, which mirrors his personal struggle to reveal subconscious feelings about his existential place in the world. This abstract work is complex\, messy\, intuitive and thought provoking\, and this will be a stellar local exhibit by an artist who typically exhibits his work in New York\, London and Los Angeles. First Friday Opening Reception is on May 1st\, from 5 to 8\, and “A Rattletrap Sailboat” shows through the end of the month.

DESCRIPTION:Madeline Eileen Goolie\, known as MEG\, is an Alaskan-born printmaking and multimedia artist. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Washington State University with a focus on relief printmaking. Her practice grows naturally out of her time spent in the wilderness of the Alaskan coast\, where she has had many encounters with the numerous animal inhabitants of the region. Her recent work explores themes of memory\, loss\, and familial connections through symbolic animal imagery. Madeline actively showcases her work at galleries\, fairs\, and artist markets throughout the Inland / Pacific Northwest and Alaska.
