SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Bab Geuleus: 1. Rice Bowl 2. Means of Living"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception for this show\, plus meet artist Jennifer Seo! \nSHOW STATEMENT:\nThe word rice bowl in Korean (bab geuleus) functions as both a specific object and a figure of speech for livelihood\, and survival. In my work\, the bowl becomes a stand-in for what cultural memory is carried\, emptied\, and carefully protected in diasporic life. Meticulous craft disguises an understated humor that examines the tensions between preservation\, translation\, and disappearance. \n ARTIST STATEMENT:\nCommonplace objects embody a philosophy and culture that construct our lives. I recreate objects found from old family photographs as delicate paper sculptures. As I look through the photos\, I pick out common objects that those in the scene would have had the most interaction with. My making process is intentionally repetitive and careful. This meticulous labor elevates the handmade objects through the time and care spent producing it. The limiting characteristics of paper emphasize the replicated-ness of the realized object and I am interested in this preservation that deconstructs the original. I find the accessibility and fragility of paper very poetic. The handcrafted sculptures are a ritual of labor and time meant to carry the viewer beyond the immediate object to a thoughtful connecting point. These works are not about the objects\, but rather the time of the objects. Recreating these objects is a study of my family that I have always felt disconnected from\, but cherish. The ghostly visual of the sculptures produces a sense of preservation and loss. These sculptures are an exercise for locating my Korean American perspective. As I make the work\, I project myself into experiences I was not always present for. These objects are identifiably hand activated because I want the viewer to be able to recognize that action and insert themselves into an imagined scene with the work\, participating in my attempt to connect.

SUMMARY:CLTRE Gallery Community Art Fundraiser & Relief Drive
DESCRIPTION:Our hearts are with everyone affected by the Spokane Complex Fires. \nAfter much thought\, we’ve decided to postpone our official “Through the Lens” exhibition reception until September. Right now\, it feels more important to come together in support of our community than to celebrate an exhibition. \nInstead\, this Friday\, August 7\, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM\, CLTRE Gallery will open its doors for a Community Art Fundraiser & Relief Drive. \nWe’ll be raising funds for our dear friend\, teammate\, and CLTRE’s photographer\, Jordan Wertman\, along with his wife Sammi and their growing family\, who have their first baby on the way\, who recently lost their home in the fires. \nWe’ll also be collecting essential donations for individuals and families affected by the wildfires\, including clothes\, nonperishable food\, hygiene products\, baby items\, pet supplies\, and other needed essentials. \nLocal artists are invited to donate artwork for our fundraiser. Some of the local artists whose work will be auctioned off include: \n\nMelaine Williams\nSonny and Lisa Moeckel\nGwyn Pevonka\nJordan Bardo\nSkyler Powell\nRKVR\nMatthew Wolf\nMo Stach\nAnd more!\n\nParticipating artists may choose whether the proceeds from their donated piece benefit Jordan and his family or another wildfire-related cause that is meaningful to them\, such as another affected family or a local relief organization. If you want to participate\, please reach out to us. \nWhether you come to donate supplies\, bid on artwork\, support local artists\, or simply stand alongside your neighbors\, we hope you’ll join us as we show what our community is all about. Reach out to us ahead of time if you want to bring donations the next couple of days. We will be open and accepting donations Wednesday 8/5 until 5 pm\, Thursday 8/6 and Friday 8/7 8 to 5 pm (before the event). \nLocated at:\nCLTRE Gallery\n425 W. 2nd Ave.\, Spokane\, WA 99201\nFriday\, August 7\n5:00 to 8:00 PM\nThank you\, Spokane\, for reminding us that even in the hardest moments\, we are stronger together! ❤️🙏🏽

SUMMARY:Works by Kel Hudson
DESCRIPTION:Hoping to connect viewers with place\, Hudson’s work often grounds itself in moments and places the American people all share and are familiar with. She tends not to sketch or plan her pieces but will instead focus on tasks or locations that interest her and will observe them for months before any work is made. Kelley is a quiet and elusive creative that blossoms in reticent observation. She is a voyeur of the everyday and a lover of the seemingly mundane. Her forms are heavily influenced by the clean lines and soft aesthetics of the Nordics. Her pallet erupts from her upbringing in Southern California and the inevitable influences of the hispanic and asian cultures that enrich the area. Her subject matter is born of the community surrounding her and the deep and troubling socio-economic patterns currently inherent in 2020s America.

SUMMARY:Bab Geuleus: 1. Rice Bowl 2. Means of Living
DESCRIPTION:SHOW STATEMENT:\nThe word rice bowl in Korean (“bab geuleus”) functions as both a specific object and a figure of speech for livelihood\, and survival. \nThis show will be at Terrain gallery August 8th – August 29th\nGallery Hours: Thursday-Saturday | 4PM – 7PM

Her mother\, Mrs Warren\, who has been a distant figure during Vivie’s childhood in boarding schools and college\, arranges for her to meet her friend Mr Praed\, a middle-aged\, handsome architect\, at the house where Vivie is staying. Mrs Warren arrives with her business partner\, Sir George Crofts\, who is attracted to Vivie despite their 25-year age difference. Vivie flirts with the youthful waster Frank Gardner. Frank’s father\, the Reverend Samuel Gardner\, has a past history with Vivie’s mother; indeed\, he may be Vivie’s out-of-wedlock father\, making Vivie and Frank half-siblings.
