Their very first pastel class was at a local art school\, and they were the only adults in the class. But they were hooked! They traveled and learned together with many professional artists which put them on the right track. DESCRIPTION:The City of Spokane Arts Commission is pleased to present Traversing\, an exhibition by Idaho artists Sally Graves Machlis and Delphine Keim at the Chase Gallery in Spokane City Hall. The exhibition will be on view September 4 – October 30\, 2026\, with a free public opening reception on September 4th from 5:00-8:00 pm. \nPainter\, Sally Graves Machlis\, and graphic designer\, Delphine Keim\, combine their sensibilities within their mixed media work. The artists invite reflection through ambiguity\, validation\, and even dismay. The work focuses on the commonalities that we all share and explores environmental\, social and personal issues. \nBoth artists are scheduled to be present during the September 4th First Friday reception at the Chase Gallery. Visitors will have an opportunity to meet Machlis and Keim and learn more about the stories and processes behind their collaborative work. There will also be poets from the Teen Poetry Cohort at Spark Central reading their work throughout the evening.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Found in Translation\, a show by Elizabeth Lancaster at Terrain Gallery. This show is Elizabeth’s way of processing connections to her father and his family’s immigration experience. These images are inspired by stories told by her father\, memories of he and his family\, and their life as emigrants from Mexico. The body of work is born from questions that surround her own story – what it means to hold ties to so much culture and history and yet only know her heritage through what is translated by her family. Using watercolor\, Elizabeth learned to weave in her own visual perspective\, adding bold hues and patterns to juxtapose her father’s black and white stories of poverty\, hardship\, commitment to family\, and faith. This series of watercolors are both joyful and somber\, colorful and achromatic. This show is Elizabeth’s way of processing connections to her father and his family’s immigration experience. These images are inspired by stories told by her father\, memories of he and his family\, and their life as emigrants from Mexico. The body of work is born from questions that surround her own story – what it means to hold ties to so much culture and history and yet only know her heritage through what is translated by her family. Using watercolor\, Elizabeth learned to weave in her own visual perspective\, adding bold hues and patterns to juxtapose her father’s black and white stories of poverty\, hardship\, commitment to family\, and faith. This series of watercolors are both joyful and somber\, colorful and achromatic. Compete in a live\, two-hour art competition during First Friday in downtown Spokane. Selected artists receive a $100 stipend\, promotional exposure\, and the opportunity to have their artwork featured as the following month’s official First Friday poster.
