Measures & Propositions
Utilizing the principles outlined in the DSP Policy Platform and feedback from DSP members and downtown stakeholders, the DSP board evaluates ballot measures that impact downtown vitality and vibrancy. As Spokane voters evaluate the issues on their August 2026 ballots, the DSP:
Opposes: Public Transportation benefit area - proposition 1
Reauthorizes 0.2% local sales and use tax through 2048 for STA
After careful consideration about fiscal priorities and timing, the DSP board voted to oppose Proposition 1 on the August 2026 ballot. Our position is not a reflection of the value of public transit, or the quality of the services Spokane Transportation Authority (STA) provides. Rather, our position reflects the reality that taxpayers are being asked to fund a growing number of important public needs at a time when available resources are limited. In this environment, difficult choices must be made about which investments should take precedence.
Consistent feedback from DSP members and the broader community indicates that the community’s highest priorities remain focused on addressing urgent public needs that affect safety, economic vitality, and quality of life. The DSP believes those priorities should remain the primary focus of new public revenue commitments at this time.
A reliable public transportation system remains important, and the DSP remains committed to working with STA and our public partners to support this system while advocating for responsible fiscal stewardship and investment in the issues our stakeholders have identified as most critical.
Candidates
Elected leaders play a critical role in shaping a strong and thriving downtown. Following the August primary, the DSP will invite candidates running for Spokane County offices and Washington legislative district 3 (downtown district) to share their vision and priorities for downtown Spokane. Check back in September for candidate responses.
