Spokane Falls Boulevard Gets a Colorful “Sweater Makeover” for National Yarn Bombing Day

Community volunteers create nearly 3,900 square feet of fiber art as trees are wrapped in colorful installations beginning June 10 and on display through the end of July.

The Downtown Spokane Partnership (DSP), in partnership with Art Salvage Spokane, is celebrating National Yarn Bombing Day by transforming trees along Spokane Falls Boulevard into a colorful, community-created public art installation.

Installation begins the evening of Wednesday, June 10, and will be completed in time for National Yarn Bombing Day on Thursday, June 11, when Spokane Falls Boulevard is unveiled as an outdoor display of community fiber art. Yarn bombing is a form of street art in which knit or crocheted yarn is used to cover or decorate public objects such as trees, benches, poles, statues, or fences.

This project is part of DSP’s ongoing efforts to create memorable experiences and bring unexpected moments of delight to residents, workers, and visitors. Thirteen trees along Spokane Falls Boulevard are wrapped in hand-knit and crocheted panels created by local volunteers, adding color, creativity, and personality to one of downtown’s most traveled corridors.

“This installation reflects the creativity and generosity that make Spokane special,” said Elisabeth Hooker, DSP vice president of marketing and activation. “Creating welcoming public spaces and moments of surprise is an important part of our work downtown, and this project is a wonderful example of the community coming together to make that happen.”

DSP extends its sincere thanks to the dozens of volunteers who contributed their time and talents by knitting, crocheting, assembling, and installing the artwork. Over the course of four meetups, volunteers crafted just under 3,900 square feet of squares and patterns. Their efforts transform an everyday streetscape into a temporary outdoor gallery celebrating creativity, collaboration, and community spirit.

The installation will remain on display through the end of July, and the public is encouraged to visit Spokane Falls Boulevard to experience the work while it is on view.
