Downtown Spokane Partnership (DSP) today announced former Pittsburgh Mayor and senior fellow at the Urban Land Institute Tom Murphy will keynote the second annual State of Downtown & Awards program on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, 8-10 a.m. at the Spokane Convention Center.

“We are thrilled to have Tom, he’s been an incredible force for urban renewal,” said Emilie Cameron, DSP President & CEO.  “His knowledge and experience in turning a city around during hard times by focusing on key issues, opportunities and partnerships are important messages for Spokane to hear.”

With unique insights and expertise on urban revitalization initiatives, in particular what it will take to support downtown’s economic health, Murphy has played a key role in driving investment and long-lasting commitment to building strong urban centers. Among his achievements, he oversaw efforts to secure $1 billion in funding for the development of two professional sports facilities and the largest certified green building in the United States, as well as the transformation of over 1,000 acres of blighted industrial properties into new commercial, residential, retail, and public uses. He also oversaw the development of over 25 miles of new riverfront trails and parks, demonstrating his commitment to creating vibrant and accessible public spaces.

The fast-paced and thought-provoking State of Downtown program will also recognize 2023 Legacy Awardee Washington Trust Bank’s positive and sustainable contributions to Spokane.  Washington Trust Bank is the largest privately-held community bank in the Northwest. Founded in 1902, Washington Trust has been a key presence in downtown for over 120 years. The 2023 Impact Award is presented to The Podium, a building that’s creating international recognition for Spokane and reshaping use of downtown’s North Bank.  In 2022, The Podium hosted 33 events and nearly 87,000 athletes and spectators, generating $119 million in economic impact.
