On a rainy fall day last October during a cleanup event hosted by the Downtown Spokane Partnership (DSP) volunteers assisted the Downtown Clean Team in planting 1,200 tulips in hexagonal planters across from Riverfront Park. Those bulbs are now making an appearance for the enjoyment of Spokane residents and visitors.

The planters, a legacy of Expo ’74, have added beauty to Spokane Falls Boulevard for over 50 years. Maintained by the Clean Team, the goal for 2025 was to maximize the growing season.

“This is perhaps one of the most visible streets in Spokane,” said Paul Lower, DSP vice president of safe and clean programs. “These planters don’t just belong to downtown; they belong to the entire community.” Tulip season in Spokane typically lasts through early May, just in time for Bloomsday. According to Lower, the tulips will continue to bloom year after year, with the number expected to double next spring.

The Downtown Clean Team annualy plants and maintains nearly 200 sidewalk planters and hanging baskets within the 83-square-block downtown Business Improvement District. By late summer, when the planters are in full bloom, they enhance the vibrancy of Spokane’s sidewalks. Downtown Spokane boasts a 92 percent walkability score on the national Walk Score review, and Lower believes the team’s beautification efforts contribute to that score.

Volunteer registration is now open for Spring Clean Week 2025, happening April 28 through May 2. Each year before Bloomsday, the Downtown Spokane Partnership leads a cleanup effort to sweep away the winter grime and get downtown ready for Lilac Season. With the support from Downtown Spokane Grocery Outlet and the City of Spokane, teams and individual volunteers are invited to roll up their sleeves, show their civic pride, and “Get Dirty for Downtown.” Sign up and learn more at downtownspokane.org.

Organizations and individuals can contribute to downtown’s walkability by sponsoring a sidewalk planter for $50, supporting the Clean Team’s efforts to purchase and maintain plants each year. With expert care and meticulous upkeep, these planters create a welcoming pedestrian environment. Donors may contribute anonymously or dedicate their sponsorship in honor of a friend, family member, or organization by reserving a planter.
