Ruby Hospitality, Spokane developer Jerry Dicker's hotel and restaurant company, has purchased the historic Montvale Hotel in a foreclosure sale. The 36 room boutique hotel opened in 1899 as an SRO and is the oldest hotel in the city.

The hotel will continue operating throughout the remodeling and upgrading process.  Plans include a lobby expansion into the corner retail space which will include a community coffee shop serving both hotel guests and the public. Extensive renovations are underway, which will include the original skylights and the decor and furnishings in the common areas and rooms. All the mechanical systems, including the air conditioning, are being repaired.

Located in the heart of the Downtown Spokane Entertainment District, the Montvale Hotel is less than a block from the Fox Theater, the Knitting Factory, and the Bing Theater, which Jerry and Patty Dicker purchased in 2012. Dicker plans to reopen a restaurant in the old Catacombs space in the basement area that was once the boiler room of the hotel. Scratch Restaurant and Rain Lounge will probably remain tenants on the first floor.

The Montvale will receive the same attention to detail that has transformed Dicker’s other hotel properties from dated motels into stylish, artistic small hotels.  Hotel Ruby and Ruby 2, both located in the heart of downtown were formerly a Rodeway Inn and a Ramada Express. The former Burgans Furniture complex on Division is the latest project to get Dicker's "Life is Art" treatment and has recently opened as Ruby Suites furnished extended stay apartments.  Ruby Hospitality has become regionally known for its innovative art installations, complimentary bicycles, free wi-fi, affordable prices and first class service.

Dicker says “We are thrilled to add the Montvale to our hotel options.  My wife, Patty, and I have a passion for art and historical preservation.  We look forward to installing amazing art that will be both contemporary and consistent with the historic feel of the Montvale.  Our guests will be treated to a first class operation that will be consistent with the hotel’s original era but will include all the comforts of today."
