The Downtown Spokane Partnership (DSP) is excited to announce a call for artists to participate in an innovative initiative to enhance the vibrancy and allure of downtown Spokane through the installation of interactive art pieces or photo backdrops in four public plazas. These installations aim to engage the community, attract visitors, and contribute to the cultural richness of our city. Artists are invited to submit proposals for public art pieces that will contribute to the vibrancy and cultural richness of downtown Spokane, engaging residents and visitors alike. Each selected artist will receive a total award of $2,500, inclusive of artist stipend and materials. Proposed projects must be a minimum of 8 feet by 8 feet and designed for durability in a public space.

Objectives

  • Community Engagement: Foster a sense of belonging and pride among residents and visitors through interactive art experiences.
  • Promote Tourism: Create memorable landmarks and attractions that draw tourists to explore Downtown Spokane.
  • Cultural Enrichment: Showcase the diversity and creativity of our local art scene, celebrating Spokane’s heritage and identity.
  • Revitalize Public Spaces: Activate underutilized public plazas, encouraging pedestrian traffic, social interaction, and community gatherings.

Proposed install date: May 4, 2024

  • The installations will be placed in four strategically chosen privately operated public plazas, maximizing visibility, accessibility, and foot traffic.
  • Collaborating closely with local artists, designers, and community stakeholders, we seek to create pieces that reflect Spokane’s unique character and identity, incorporating themes inspired by the region’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and urban vitality.
  • The art pieces will feature elements of interactivity, such as artistic and kinetic sculptures, painted backdrops, and creative elements, inviting active participation and exploration.

Submission Process

  1. Use the online form to provide a brief description of your proposed artwork, including its concept, theme, and intended impact on the community. Additionally, highlight any unique features or materials that will enhance the artwork’s suitability for a public setting. Provide a brief artist statement introducing yourself, your artistic background, and your motivation for creating public art. Share any previous experience or relevant projects that demonstrate your capability to execute the proposed artwork.
  2. 5-7 proposals will be selected to receive a stipend of $150 each to develop and submit a full proposal, including detailed renderings of their proposed installations. These proposals should further elaborate on the conceptualization, design, and feasibility of the artwork including sample photos or visual renderings. Include images or visual renderings of your proposed artwork. These visuals should provide a clear representation of the design, scale, and aesthetic qualities of the piece. High-resolution photos or detailed sketches are preferred. Present a detailed budget outlining how you plan to allocate the $2,500 award. Specify the breakdown of costs, including artist stipend, materials, fabrication, installation, and any other relevant expenses. Ensure that your budget is realistic and transparent.  Describe the materials and construction methods you will use to ensure the durability and longevity of your artwork in a public space. Consider factors such as weather resistance, structural integrity, and maintenance requirements.
