The DSP urges Spokane County voters to pass Measure 1 in the November general election

Spokane, WASH. (September 30, 2024) – The Downtown Spokane Partnership today announced that its Board of Directors has unanimously endorsed Spokane County Measure 1 to renew the Juvenile Detention Facilities and Jails Sales Tax for another 10 years.

“Renewing funding to continue operations of juvenile detention facilities and jails ensures Spokane County has the facilities necessary to keep our community safe,” said Emilie Cameron, President & CEO of the Downtown Spokane Partnership. “Passing Measure 1 is critical to prevent an annual budget shortfall that could impact other critical County programs and services.”

As a renewal of existing tax, Spokane County voters will not incur a tax increase with the passage of Measure 1. Spokane County will use funds only for continuing the operation, maintenance, financing, and remodeling of juvenile detention facilities and jails, which are required by state law. If approved by a majority of voters, the tax would extend 10 years through December 31, 2035, which will allow voters to revisit the program in ten years to assess effectiveness and need.
