Artist Statement
I came across a Japanese concept about a year ago and decided that it would be the inspiration for my first solo show. Shu Ha Ri means Learn the Rules (Shu), Break the Rules (Ha), Transcend the Rules (Ri). The principle Ri inspires me to let go of how my work will be received by others and even myself. I want to lean into my knowledge of pottery and let my hands guide me as I build pieces from coils, slabs and pinch pots and when I layer the surface with slips, stains, terra sigillata and glaze. I make shapes I’ve not made before and I cover them in combinations of materials I am bringing together for my first time. I remind myself to work from a stream of consciousness and have faith that this freedom will bring joy and reveal to me where I want to go next. Thank you for being my audience and my muse.
