Spokane, WA – April 1, 2025 – The Downtown Spokane Partnership (DSP), in collaboration with Civibot and The City Lab Arts Initiative, is taking downtown cleanliness to a whole new level—one futuristic goat at a time. As part of Spring Clean Week 2025, launching April 28, DSP will unveil five brand-new Goatron 3000s, autonomous trash-eating machines inspired by Spokane’s most beloved and quirky landmark: the Garbage Goat.
For over 50 years, the original Garbage Goat in Riverfront Park has delighted visitors by “eating” trash through its vacuum-powered system. Originally designed for Expo ’74 by artist Paula Turnbull, the Garbage Goat remains a symbol of Spokane’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Now, DSP is embracing that legacy with a first-of-its-kind partnership blending technology, urban beautification, and a little bit of whimsy.
The Goatron 3000, developed by Civibot, builds on this legacy using cutting-edge LiDAR and camera technology to autonomously detect and collect trash throughout downtown. The City Lab Arts Initiative, known for innovative urban solutions through artistic expression, has contributed to the Goatron 3000’s aesthetic, ensuring that Spokane’s streets stay clean in both form and function.
“We were inspired by Tucson’s Dust Devil Darryl project—though we promise to keep our Goatrons from mysteriously vanishing to private golf courses,” said a DSP spokesperson. “And if all goes well, the next step is Turkeybot, to help South Hill’s resident turkeys navigate the streets of Spokane safely.”
Spokane residents and visitors are invited to Spring Clean Week 2025 to witness the Goatron 3000s in action. Stay tuned for additional announcements as Spokane pioneers the future of clean, creative, and slightly absurd urban innovation.
