Safety tips from SPD

Neighborhood safety takes a community effort. Join with the Spokane Police Department (SPD) in an effort for a safer Spokane and a safer downtown.

Getting involved is easy. It’s as simple as communicating with with neighbors and family. Start by following the SPD on social media to share crime prevention tips. To be more involved, participate in Riverside Neighborhood Council meetings and other community meetings, or consider volunteering with the SPD or Spokane C.O.P.S.

Simple steps to help stop property crimes

  • Lock items in your truck
  • Observe and report
  • Cars should never run unattended
  • Keep garage door closed

For a more in-depth look at property, invite an officer to conduct a CPTED Assessment of the spaces around your place of business.

Protect your vehicle with a free club available to pick up at SPD’s North, South and Downtown Precincts during normal business hours. Must show proof of ownership for one of the following vehicles:

  • 1983-2005 Honda Civic or Honda Accord
  • 1984-2005 Toyota Camry
  • 1990-2005 Subaru Legacy
  • 1985-2000 Jeep Cherokee
  • 1990-2005 Ford Explorer
  • 1985-2010 Dodge Caravan
  • 1990-2000 Ford Escape/Escort
  • 1990-2005 Subaru Impreza
  • 1985-2000 Nissan Sentra

Pay Attention to Prevention: Don’t be a victim

  • Lock up: Close and lock doors, windows and garages when you are away or asleep.
  • Turn lights on: Lights deter crime. Leave some interior lights on or on a timer.
  • Trim trees and shrubs: Clear any excess that can be used as hiding places.
  • Keep your keys: Thieves know where to look. Never leave keys hidden under doormats or other “secret” places.
  • Mark your valuables: Engrave valuables with your driver’s license number and record serial numbers.
  • Lock your car: Lock and secure doors and windows when you leave.
  • Take your keys: Take them with you or stay with your vehicle while its running.
  • Protect your belongings: Keep garage door opener, change and personal information out of plain view. Use a vehicle anti-theft device if possible.
  • Reduce temptation: Secure items, such as guns, wallets, purses, electronics, or tools away from your vehicle. Place items in your trunk out of public view.

Report crime and help identify trends

  • Report a crime in progress to 9-1-1.
  • Call Crime Check at 509-456-2233 for one that has occurred previously.
  • Theft reports help area law enforcement agencies track crime trends.
